Deveuster: Deveuster

[də'vøːstər], Damiaan, eigentlich Jozef Deveuster, katholischer Missionar (Picpus-Gesellschaft), * Tremelo (Provinz Brabant) 3. 1. 1840, ✝ auf Molokai (nordwestlich von Hawaii) 15. 4. 1889; wirkte seit 1864 auf den Hawaii-Inseln, seit 1873 bei den Aussätzigen auf der Insel Molokai. Um 1876 erkrankte er selbst und starb an Lepra. Sein Leichnam wurde 1936 nach Löwen überführt. 1938 wurde der Seligsprechungsprozess eingeleitet; am 4. 6. 1995 wurde Deveuster durch Papst Johannes Paul II. in Brüssel selig gesprochen.
